Shadows

Andy Warhol’s Shadows (1978–79) was first presented by Dia in 1979. A single painting in multiple parts, Shadows is one of Warhol’s most abstract works, yet one that cohesively synthesizes key elements of his practice, including film, painting, photography, and screen printing. The installation surrounds the viewer with a series of canvases, presented edge-to-edge around the perimeter of the room, in conformity with Warhol’s original vision.

Marked by the fall of the Berlin Wall, the attacks of September 11, and civil war, the end of the twentieth century can also be viewed as a time that presaged immense global revolutions, both social and digital, that have transformed our world. Praying for Time reflects the diversity of voices and concerns in art produced during that pivotal period from 1980 through the early 2000s. In celebration of Dada’s one hundredth anniversary in 2016 and the centennial of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain in 2017, this exhibition examines how artists have incorporated commonplace household items into their work, removing these objects from the context of the home in ways that subvert the experiences of daily life. This exhibit has traveled from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Work by Duchamp, Duane Hanson, Damien Hirst, Man Ray, Takashi Murakami, Nam June Paik, Robert Therrien, and Andy Warhol is included.

This exhibition will investigate how minorities use their bodies to produce dissident forms of beauty, subjectivity, and desire. These minor poetics are perceived as a threat to the normative world, and yet craved by mainstream culture. Paying attention to the cultural debates, conflicts, and struggles that surround voguing as a case study of radical performance, Elements of Vogue will address the complexity of these dynamics of assimilation and resistance. Work by Ellen Gallagher and Andy Warhol will be included.

One hundred years ago, Marcel Duchamp forever changed the nature of art when he submitted Fountain, a porcelain urinal, to the Society of Independent Artists exhibition in New York. The subsequent rejection of Duchamp’s Fountain by the exhibition’s organizers ignited a controversy that continues today about the definition of art. This exhibition includes work by Jeff Koons, Richard Phillips, Andy Warhol, and others.

Thirty years ago, Andy Warhol’s final series of paintings debuted in Milan. To mark the anniversary of this extraordinary project, the Museo del Novecento presents a key work, one of the largest and most complex in the series, the monumental painting Sixty Last Suppers, which approximates the scale of Leonardo’s original. The show is organized with the participation of Jessica Beck, associate curator at the Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh.
