Gagosian is pleased to announce August, an exhibition of new large-scale paintings and works on paper by Sabine Moritz at the gallery in Rome. This is the artist’s first exhibition with Gagosian and her first in Italy.

Moritz’s body of paintings, drawings, and prints represents a succession of suspended moments, juxtaposing interpretations of the artist’s immediate surroundings and the natural world with, in her previous work, deconstructed documentary images, and, in more recent paintings, a narrative approach enhanced by the paintings’ broad horizontal format. Adapting and repurposing a catalogue of symbolic and abstract motifs, she ponders the mercurial dynamics of transience and decay. Her works enhance our sensitivity to the passage of time, locating personal experience within shared narratives.

Since 2015, Moritz has worked increasingly in an abstract mode, producing improvised paintings and drawings that she dubs “psychological landscapes.” In these, she addresses her enduring themes of recollection and history in a consciously ambiguous manner inspired by perceptual processes. Hunting for primal sensory experience, she avoids preliminary sketching, confronting the viewer with a dialogue between color and gesture.

Gagosian è lieta di annunciare August, una mostra di nuovi dipinti di grandi dimensioni e opere su carta di Sabine Moritz presso lo spazio di Roma. Questa è la prima mostra dell’artista con la galleria e la sua prima in Italia.

Il corpus di dipinti, disegni e opere su carta di Moritz rappresenta una successione di momenti sospesi, in cui l’artista, nei suoi lavori più datati, affianca all’interpretazione del suo ambiente circostante e del mondo naturale, immagini documentali destrutturate; mentre nei suoi dipinti più recenti presenta un approccio maggiormente narrativo rafforzato dall’ampio formato orizzontale dei dipinti. Adattando e modificando un inventario di motivi simbolici e astratti, Moritz riflette sulle dinamiche volubili della provvisorietà e del ricordo. Le sue opere intensificano la nostra sensibilità verso il trascorrere del tempo, collocando l’esperienza personale in narrazioni condivise.

Dal 2015 Moritz lavora con uno stile sempre più astratto, producendo dipinti e disegni improvvisati che definisce “paesaggi psicologici”. In queste opere l’artista affronta i temi ricorrenti del ricordo e della storia in modo consapevolmente ambiguo, ispirandosi ai processi percettivi. Ricercando l’esperienza sensoriale primordiale, l’artista evita gli schizzi preliminari, ponendo lo spettatore di fronte a un dialogo tra colore e gesto.

Nelle tele più recenti di Moritz, fitte pennellate sovrapposte sono associate a contrasti cromatici per esprimere un’intensa libertà visiva. Applicando la pittura con vigore e a strati – a volte come impasto che poi raschia per conferire alle superfici una trama variegata – Moritz spesso privilegia la collisione tra forme e tinte rispetto all’armonia compositiva, mantenendo sempre un ritmo visivo.

Nei dipinti esposti a Roma, tra i quali ve ne sono quattro tra i più grandi realizzati dall’artista finora, Moritz gioca ancora una volta con probabilità e associazioni di ripetizioni e differenze per considerare la possibilità continua di speranza e bellezza anche nelle circostanze più difficili. Le opere in August alludono alle Metamorfosi di Ovidio e ad una varietà di fonti della storia dell’arte. Evocando stati liminali dell’essere e figure in transizione, i lavori in mostra incorporano figure semi-oscure che sembrano emergere da composizioni astratte dai colori sobri quasi naturali. Alludendo all’interpretazione tizianesca dell’incontro tra Artemide e Atteone, per esempio, l’artista affronta i temi della fragilità umana, della sensualità e della forza, evocando un senso di nostalgia per un idillio perduto. Con Actaeon’s End (2023), l’artista ripropone la consuetudine di iniziare ogni mostra con un collegamento alla precedente, mantenendo un continuum vitale tra ogni progetto.

Moderated by art historian and curator Cristiana Perrella, the discussion will center around Moritz’s latest large-scale paintings, as well as the contemporary relevance of abstract painting and its ability to embody history, memory, and the natural world. The conversation will be conducted in English.
