A Thousand Crossings
In this video, Sally Mann speaks with curators Sarah Greenough and Sarah Kennel on the occasion of her exhibition A Thousand Crossings at the Jeu de Paume, Paris. Discussing the themes of the exhibition, which focuses on Mann’s relationship to the American South, they speak about her pictures’ articulation of memory, love, the bonds of family, and nature. Mann describes her experimental process and technique across subject matter, ranging from figure studies to still lifes and landscapes, and the role of “felicitous accidents” and “serendipitous moments” in her photographs.

American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Sally Mann was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2022. The artist’s induction ceremony took place in September 2023. Founded in 1780, the academy is both an honorary society that recognizes and celebrates the excellence of its members and an independent research center convening leaders from across disciplines, professions, and perspectives to explore challenges facing society, identify solutions, and promote nonpartisan recommendations that advance the public good.
