About

Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings and works on paper by Alberto Di Fabio. This is his first solo exhibition in Athens.

Di Fabio’s work merges the worlds of art and science with themes of biology, ecology and nature. The earlier works in this group explore structures of the human body and brain. The images are microscopic in their focus, implying biological diagrams, cellular structures, flora, eco systems, and pharmacological research. Di Fabio observes how the human mind's capacity for information seems amplified due to the increasing means of communications that saturate our daily lives, and he invites us to reconsider the body in its most essential functions - posing questions about science and aesthetics, life and art.

Throughout his abstract images, Di Fabio has developed and expanded his interest in the natural world. He overlaps layers of images culled from scientific and medical references and filters them through his own reflections, enlarging the particulars and adding imagined details. In his latest work, he investigates the perennial human fascination with the relationship between art and the cosmos, addressing the laws that regulate chaos in the universe, such as the theory of relativity and quantum theory. In Neurone blue (2009), he diagrams the chemical signals that are transmitted via synapses to represent the human sensory system while alluding to the cosmology of the heavens. Di Fabio cites the ancient Greek philosophers Anaximander, an early proponent of science and the study of stars, planets and galaxies, and Democritus, who invented an atomic theory of the universe, as inspirations.

His untitled works on paper continue his dedication to organic form, subject, and process. Applying acrylic to Chinese paper, luminous arcs shoot across the page while kaleidoscopic patterns create dizzying allover effects.
