About
Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring new photographs by Roger Ballen. This will be the first exhibition to focus on large-scale prints. These startling, confrontational and emotional photographs continue Ballen's exploration of a population outside Johannesburg, South Africa, largely overlooked and invisible since the demise of Apartheid.
Emerging from his critically acclaimed body of work entitled "Outland", these photographs continue to challenge the viewer and blur the boundaries between what is real and what is constructed. Included in the exhibition will be portraits, interiors and still-lifes, many of which have never been exhibited or published.
This exhibition follows on the heels of an extraordinary year for Roger Ballen. In February 2002, Gagosian Gallery presented Roger Ballen's inaugural exhibition in the United States at 980 Madison to great critical acclaim. "Outland" was nominated for the Citigroup Photography Prize and he exhibited in March at the Photographer's Gallery in London. Ballen was awarded Photographer of the Year at the Arles Festival in France this summer. Selected by an international panel, Ballen's work was chosen as the most valuable contribution to the history of photography in 2002. In 2002, his work has also been exhibited in museums in Denmark, France, Italy and currently Ireland. A solo exhibition of his works opens December 5, 2002 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
On display in our new upstairs gallery space, Ballen's show will run concurrently with Vanessa Beecroft: VB46 Photograph
