About
Gagosian London is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Georg Baselitz.
In this body of work, Baselitz continues to explore canine imagery, a theme that has recurred throughout his oeuvre, from his earliest animal paintings to recent work. The dog in his paintings is both a trusted companion and a wild counterpart to the people, interiors, and landscapes of Baselitz’s universe.
The majority of these paintings were completed in Imperia, Italy, during the summer of 2000. While there, Baselitz acquired a large-scale sixteenth-century Italian frame, which inspired him to carve, sculpt, and paint frames for this series.
In a direct allusion to the sculpture/painting dichotomy of the northern European school of paintings of the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, these works combine the elemental solidity of sculpture with clear atmospheric layers of paint.
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with a preface by David Sylvester and an essay by the German philosopher Georg Simmel.
