Pablo Picasso

L’Escalier de Flore

Published by PAB (Pierre Andre Benoit), 1958

Poem by Rene Char

9 3/16 × 13 3/4 inches (23.3 × 35 cm); Folio, loose in Bristol wrappers, front cover with window-shaped aperture spanned by six red and black threads; Two drypoints on celluloid, one in color.

----------

A wonderful collaboration among friends: Pablo Picasso, poet René Char and publisher P. André Benoit. For the full page color drypoint of a geometric and abstracted human figure, Picasso used a complex method of creating this powerful image.

“Picasso made a large drypoint in two colors. First he engraved the limbs of a human figure in simplified form on celluloid, and then cut out of the celluloid a star and a large roof-shaped piece. After this three-step procedure, he cut off the right side of the roof-shaped piece, turned it over and engraved, thereon, the eyes, nose and mouth, which were printed in red.” Goeppert

Signed on the colophon by the publisher and Picasso.
