Picasso's fondness for bullfighting is the perfect match for Merimee’s Carmen, the story upon which Georges Bizet celebrated opera is based.  Picasso contributed an unusually large number of illustrations, which were printed at the atelier of the master engraver Roger Lacouriere. One of an edition of 320 copies, of which this is one of 289 on Montval wove paper, signed by Picasso in the colophon.
