Fascinated by the culture of knife-making and a knife collector himself, designer Marc Newson has created a superb folding knife as a limited edition exclusive to Gagosian Gallery. The knife blade is made from Damascus or "watered" steel, an ancient technology favoured by specialist knifemakers in which steel is folded many times for maximum strength. The glimmering handle is made from sintered bronze. Balls of bronze the size of a grain of sugar are heated to the point where they melt without losing definition. They are then poured into a mold and the resulting chagrin-like surface obtained. The knife is trimmed in ice-blue titanium.
