Gagosian Gallery, on behalf of the Art Institute of Chicago, is pleased to announce the publication of a signed limited edition of forty copies of the photograph Hand Showing Book Cover (1963) by Ed Ruscha, to be included in the catalogue for "Light Years: Conceptual Art and the Photograph, 1964–1977," a major survey exhibition that will run exclusively at the Art Institute of Chicago from December 13, 2011 to March 11, 2012.
This is the first-ever edition of Ruscha’s highly significant early photograph. Hand Showing Book Cover has been produced as a silver gelatin print, signed and numbered by the artist. The beautifully designed limited-edition catalogue, published by the Art Institute of Chicago, is presented in a specially designed clamshell box and also includes a signed version of Allen Ruppersberg’s previously unpublished photowork Rona Barrett’s Hollywood, reproduced in full in the book, and a deluxe alteration to an important early piece by Arte Povera member Gilberto Zorio.
