Gagosian is pleased to announce the global representation of Jia Aili, one of China's foremost contemporary artists, who is currently the subject of a major ten-year survey at the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo in Malaga, Spain.

Born in the late seventies, Jia has developed an art practice that reflects on arts and philosophy from both East and West. While the content of his epic figurative paintings is unmistakably of his own time and cultural context, his formal virtuosity and complex layering of narrative reveal a deep and astute working knowledge of the inventions and traditions of painting from the Renaissance to the present day.

Larry Gagosian comments, "Having followed Jia's artistic journey thus far, we are very pleased to establish a working relationship with him, and we look forward to his first exhibition with the gallery."

Jia’s eponymous solo exhibition at Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Málaga in Spain remains on view until June 18, 2017.

Jia Aili was born in Dandong, China in 1979 and lives and works in Beijing. In 2004, he graduated from the New Representationalism Studio of the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, where he subsequently taught from 2005 to 2007, after which time he decided to focus exclusively on his career as a painter.

Recent solo institutional exhibitions include: “Jia Aili,” Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC), Málaga, Spain (2017); “Jia Aili,” Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi, Venice, Italy (2015); “Seeker of Hope,” Singapore Art Museum (SAM)(2012); “Good Morning, World!” Xiangning Art Museum OCT Contemporary Art Terminal, Shenzhen, China (2010); “Make Believe . . .” INIVA (Institute of International Visual Arts), London, UK (2010); “The Wasteland,” Platform China Contemporary Art Institute, Beijing, China (2007). He participated in the collateral events of the 54th Biennale di Venezia in 2011.
