Rachel Howard at the Museum Van Loon, Amsterdam
Apr 12th 2008

on view April 12-June 2, 2008
After the success of the group exhibitions Exchanging Interiors (1996), Roommates (1998), Home is where the heArt is (2000), Le Nouveau Siècle (2006) and the solo presentations Façade (2001) by Jill Magid and Private Life (2004) by Alisa Margolis, Museum Van Loon presents Rachel Howard Invited by Philippa Van Loon in 2008.
Philippa Van Loon is the youngest scion of the Van Loon family, and the initiator of this biennial modern art manifestation hosted by the Museum. In her eyes, the modern art exhibitions are the ideal opportunity to connect the past and the present.
British painter Rachel Howard is to present a series of 13 portraits of friends and family painted over the past two decades, in her first Dutch solo exhibition at the Museum Van Loon, Amsterdam.
The double fronted, canal side 17th century museum formerly a family home, is a leading example of the former splendour and glory of Amsterdam's rich trading history and one of the most famous museums in the city. The museum has been restored to its original 18th century glory, and Howard's haunting portraits replace numerous family and historical paintings throughout the house. The house at the Keizersgracht 672 came into the possession of the family in the 19th century, and has been a museum since 1973.
A catalogue of the exhibition Rachel Howard Invited by Philippa Van Loon will appear at Veenman Publishers, designed by Maarten Evenhuis.
