Gagosian Gallery London is delighted to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Georg Baselitz.
In this body of work, Baselitz continues to explore the canine imagery, a theme that has run from his earliest animal paintings to recent work. The dog in his paintings is both trusted companion as well as wild counterpart to the people, interiors and the landscapes of Baselitz' universe.
The majority of these paintings were completed in Imperia, Italy during the summer of 2000. Whilst there, Baselitz acquired a large-scale 16th century Italian frame, which inspired him to carve, sculpt and paint frames for this series.
In a direct allusion to the sculpture/painting dichotomy of the northern European school of paintings of the 14th to 16th century, these works combine the elemental solidity of sculpture with the clear atmospheric layers of paint.
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with a preface by David Sylvester and an essay by the German philosopher Georg Simmel.
