About

Gagosian is pleased to present Greenpoint Rounds, an exhibition of eight new drawings by Richard Serra.

Throughout his career, Serra has made drawings not as precursors to sculptural works, but as separate, immediate, and fundamental lines of investigation, translating intentions into marks. His drawings are explorations in their own right, integral to the overall concerns of his sculptural practice, and unique intuitive explorations within their own established criteria.

Serra began working on Greenpoint Rounds in late spring of 2009. In these large-scale works, which each measure eighty inches square, a large black circle is embedded in the surface of the heavy paper. Serra uses paint-stick, heating it to a viscous and sometimes fluid state. He slowly builds up the dense and irregular form so that each drawing has its own unique surface that appears as a palpable structure rather than a mere surface. Each drawing exerts a vastly different energy and exudes a singular character.

Nel corso della sua carriera artistica, Serra ha realizzato disegni non come fasi preparatorie per le opere scultoree, bensì come distinti, immediati, ed essenziali percorsi di ricerca nei quali l’intenzione si traduce in segno. I suoi disegni sono vere e proprie esplorazioni, ricerche autonome ed intuitive dai criteri definiti e al contempo parti integranti della ricerca scultorea dell’artista.

Serra inizia a lavorare su Greenpoint Rounds nella primavera del 2009. In questi lavori su larga scala, ciascuno lungo due metri per lato, un grande cerchio nero emerge dalla superficie pesante della carta. L’artista usa il “paintstick”, un pastello ad olio puro: scaldandolo fino a ridurlo a stato viscoso o addirittura liquido, costruisce lentamente forme dense ed irregolari. Ognuna di queste opere possiede così una propria superficie, risultando struttura tangibile piuttosto che semplice piano, e rivelando un carattere ed una energia individuali.

Violinist Alina Ibragimova performs Bach’s Sonata for Solo Violin No. 1 in G Major: Adagio (BWV 1001, c. 1720) from within Richard Serra’s sculpture Transmitter (2020) at Gagosian, Le Bourget. Organized by Bold Tendencies, a nonprofit organization that commissions artists to produce site-specific projects and present performances, in collaboration with Gagosian, this recorded performance took place on May 8, 2022 before a live concert of Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time, 1941).
